Image: Amazon Studios

Starring: Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, Patrick Schwarzenegger
Genre: Action, Adventure
Released: 2023
Seasons: 1

Before the heroes of the Seven were known all over the world, they all had to make their first starts in the world like the rest of us do – at university. Although, as you can imagine, the university system in a world filled with supes might have a different curriculum to the ones that we’re used to.

Set at the Vought founded, Godolkin University (or God U), America’s only college for superheroes, Gen V explores the lives of gifted students who are forced to compete with each other for the university’s top ranking and a chance to join The Seven.

Starring Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Maddie Phillips, the series exists alongside Prime’s original hit series The Boys (seen further down this list), with the events of the first season of Gen V preceding the fourth season of The Boys. Talk about a crossover.

Seasons: 1

Based on the book series written by former Navy SEAL Jack Carr, The Terminal List is an action-packed, conspiracy thriller with strong performances from leading stars Chris Pratt, Constance Wu and Australian actor Jai Courtney.

The Wheel of Time

Image: Amazon Studios

Starring: Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Madeleine Madden, Marcus Rutherford
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Released: 2021
Seasons: 2

It’s easy to compare Prime’s The Wheel of Time to HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, considering the fantasy storylines, natural settings and posh English accents, but fans of the original novels, written in 1990, will argue it has more of a magical element lacking in Thrones, and that WoT was even the inspiration for George R. R. Martin’s series.

When Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a stranger with magical powers enters a small and simple village, the lives of five young people take an unexpected turn as she believes she has found the reincarnation of the Dragon, an ancient prophecy that suggests a powerful figure will save the world… or destroy it.

With two series now streaming on Prime Video, The Wheel of Time is certainly the perfect fantasy series to get into while we wait for House of the Dragon to roar back on our screens.

The Continental

Image: Amazon Studios

Starring: Mel Gibson, Colin Woodell, Mishel Prada, Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Nhung Kate, Jessica Allain
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Released: 2023
Seasons: 1

Before the seemingly unlimited kills of everyone’s favourite action hero Keanu Reeves in his iconic portrayal of lethal assassin John Wick, New York and its dangerous streets ran rampant.

Centred around the famed titular hotel, The Continental transports audiences back to 1970s New York City, exploring new – and some returning – characters decades before the events of John Wick and the exploits of power within this mysterious criminal world.

Keanu Reeves won’t be returning for this one but earlier versions of Winston Scott, Charon and The Adjudicator all feature.

The Boys

Image Credit: Sony Pictures Television Distribution/Amazon Studios

Starring: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr
Genre: Action, Science Fiction, Thriller
Released: 2019
Seasons: 3

The Boys is one of Prime Video’s hero shows. Set in a world where superheroes are real but aren’t necessarily the good guys, the series follows a group of vigilantes who are determined to prove to the world that most superheroes are in fact corrupt, evil and regularly abuse their powers.

Original, compelling and wonderfully violent and graphic, The Boys is for anyone who loves a good action film or series. Plus, The Boys also has rather relevant themes that are explored cleverly and every member of this ensemble cast gives a powerful performance; especially Antony Starr.

Genre: Crime, Drama
Released: 2014
Seasons: 7

Titus Welliver stars as Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department whose strong principles and dogged pursuit for justice creates enemies on both sides of the law.

Based on the novels by Michael Connelly, Bosch delivers as a noirish police procedural that engrosses with its multi-layered, slow-burn crime stories, led by an excellent Titus Welliver who plays one of the best detectives on TV with a charismatic presence that burns the screen.

The series’ Los Angeles setting, meanwhile, is better showcased than perhaps any other show.

Darkly funny and slickly made, The Consultant succeeds as a twist-filled, left-of-centre thriller that is headlined by Christoph Waltz’s menacing, seductive performance. The series’ continuously perplexing mystery, meanwhile, will keep viewers anxiously anticipating what will come next. Those who tend to blend work and home life can appreciate the commentary that The Consultant delves into.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Image: Amazon Studios

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is based on J.R.R Tolkien’s novels and set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies and focuses on the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, both of which feature heavily in the now-iconic movie trilogies.

The Rings of Power is currently the most expensive TV show ever made, with a multi-season deal worth a reported $1 billion. But, early indications of the first season appear to show it’s a worthwhile investment, as many critics have praised the cinematography and visuals, which stay true to that of the original trilogies.

Goliath follows disgraced lawyer, Billy McBride who is given a chance at redemption; but it’ll be mighty hard. McBride is hired to take on the powerful law firm which he used to work at and helped to build, in a wrongful death lawsuit and soon discovers a huge but deadly conspiracy. Billy Bob Thornton gives an incredible performance that is phenomenal (he won a Golden Globe for his performance in season one) and the series as a whole is a fantastic drama.

If you’re after something a bit gritty and compelling, Goliath is for you.

Funny and entertaining, Good Omens should definitely be added to your watch list. There is only one season of Good Omens for now, but a second, six-episode season was commissioned in June 2021.

A conspiracy thriller that’s as engrossing as it is violent, Hunters blends topical themes with exploitation action and Tarantino-inspired historical revision.

A strong cast is led by the legendary Al Pacino, a Holocaust survivor who trains and leads the Hunters in their fight against evil. As controversial as it is entertaining, Hunters knows how to make an impression.

Based upon the novels of Elmore Leonard, Justified is a modern day western meets police procedural in which Olyphant’s gunslinging U.S. Marshal takes on all matter of outlaw, especially the slippery Beau Crowder who is played with devilish charm by Walton Goggins. Effortlessly cool and featuring one of the best protagonist/antagonist dynamics in modern TV, Justified is worth the binge watch and then some!

The Man In The High Castle

Seasons: 4

This dystopic series was loosely based on the best-selling Philip K. Dick novel of the same name and explores an alternative universe where the US lost World War II and is now run by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

The Man in the High Castle was with critical acclaim when it was released in 2015, with every successive season also proving to be received well. Regularly described as “unlike anything else on tv,” The Man in the High Castle is intriguing and thought-provoking, and well worth watching, especially if you enjoy political dramas.

The Night Manager’s plot is incredibly compelling and well-written and both Laurie and Hiddleston give terrific performances.

Outer Range

Image: Amazon Studios

Released: 2022
Seasons: 1

Imagine Yellowstone meets The Twilight Zone and you might get close to Outer Range, a sci-fi western in which a rancher named Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) finds a mysterious black void on his land.

Equally engrossing and perplexing, Outer Range is one of the most original TV shows out now. Brolin, who returns to TV after a 20-year absence, is terrific in the lead role of a rancher and family man whose life is unravelling as increasingly strange occurrences plague his existence.

Reacher

Starring: Alan Ritchson, Malcolm Goodwin, Willa Fitzgerald
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
Released: 2022
Seasons: 1

Based on the best-selling book Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series written by Lee Child, Reacher follows veteran police officer, Jack Reacher, who is falsely accused of murder as soon as he arrives in a town in the middle of nowhere. Reacher quickly discovers a massive conspiracy filled with corrupt cops and scheming politicians and must use his wits (and his military training) to prove his innocence.

The Reacher TV series isn’t the first adaptation of Lee Child’s character. Tom Cruise has starred in two Jack Reacher movies, but many thought that, while the action was good, Cruise just didn’t embody Reacher’s towering figure enough. That isn’t the case here, as Alan Ritchson is an absolute unit of a man who captures the character far better.

The series itself isn’t overly complicated, is fantastically action-packed and, if you haven’t already read the book, will have you asking a ton of questions right up until the final episode.

Sneaky Pete

Image: Amazon Studios

He assumes the identity of his cellmate, Pete to evade the gangsters and even moves in with Pete’s unsuspecting and estranged family. Extremely entertaining, Sneaky Pete is smart, suspenseful and charming.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

Released: 2018
Seasons: 2

When CIA analyst Jack Ryan notices a series of suspicious bank transfers he is thrust into a dangerous field assignment. No longer safely behind his desk, Jack must do all he can to protect the world from a new breed of threatening terrorists. This series is a reboot of all the previous films based on Tom Clancy’s books that have had Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine play Jack Ryan.

Krasinski does an excellent job and is actually considered by many as the best Jack Ryan. If you like action shows and films, you’ll love Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan as it is action-packed.
