Guy Ritchie’s back with another epic blockbuster starring British action man Henry Cavill as a Nazi-killing special ops executive on a special mission from Winston Churchill himself. Here’s everything we know about The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

Whilst Marvel fans were getting sent into an expected frenzy over the rumours of a Henry Cavill link-up in the MCU, and Bond fans were deliberating whether Henry Cavill could trade one iconic role for another, the British actor was quietly adding some more heavy-hitting blockbusters to his already celebrated filmography.

Lionsgate has announced that iconic British director known for Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Guy Ritchie, will helm the latest wartime release that will explore one of the more remarkable war-time stories.. and Henry Cavill has been confirmed in the leading role.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Cast

Henry Cavill is set to star in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming wartime flick The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The British actor will play Gus March-Phillips, who, after some quick research, doesn’t seem to feature in any historical accounts of Churchill’s Secret Army.

Fresh off the success of Reacher, Hollywood heavyweight Alan Ritchson joins Ritchie’s ensemble as Anders Lassen, a highly decorated Danish soldier who served in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare during WWII. Lassen is often remembered as one of the most remarkable and courageous soldiers of the war.

Freddie Fox joins the cast as a young Ian Fleming (before writing the iconic James Bond book series) when he was a naval officer in the war involved in Britain’s many espionage missions.

Hero Fiennes Tine (Ralph Fiennes’ nephew) also joins Alex Pettyfer, Cary Elwes, Danny Sapani, Henry Golding, Eiza González and Babs Olusanmokun, although their roles have not yet been revealed.

Fresh after leaving his iconic role as Superman in the DCU, Henry Cavill was announced to lead Guy Ritchie’s latest wartime blockbuster as Gus March-Phillips, an officer in Winston Churchill’s clandestine military group tasked with fighting the nazis on their own turf.

Although there’s no fresh details regarding his character – and no historical record – you can expect that Cavill’s version will incorporate many of the bare-knuckle, espionage suave that has become synonymous with his characters.

And with Guy Ritchie at the helm, I feel that the film may deviate from historical accuracy slightly.

After the release of his breakout film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, famed British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, known for his signature style and unparalleled lens, has been gracing our screens for more than three decades.

Ritchie has shown he has a knack for creating stylish and entertaining films that often blend elements of crime, action, and humour. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, a wartime espionage film, will undoubtedly be filled with the same classic Ritchie tropes that have connected with audiences around the world.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Plot

Details surrounding Guy Ritchie’s latest wartime feature have still been kept under wraps, but the trailer promises the same explosive action that we’ve come to expect from the British director.

“The British military recruits a small group of highly-skilled soldiers to strike against Nazi forces behind enemy lines during World War II.”

Although the plot is yet to be revealed, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on a book of the same name, that explores Britain’s wartime leader Winston Churchill’s secret military faction as they seek to thwart the Nazi advancement through Europe.

Is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare based on a true story?

Image: War Office

Guy Ritchie’s new film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on a best-selling book written by wartime correspondent Damien Lewis (no, not the actor) detailing the formation of one of the most revered military operations in history.

After defeat in Mainland Europe in the winter of 1939, the British were left reeling and Britain’s wartime leader Winston Churchill knew that the country had to strike back. So, in July 1940, Churchill unleashed a small group of highly-skilled soldiers to strike against Nazi forces, bringing together agents from various backgrounds such as military, intelligence, and civilian life to form a motley crew of agents to operate covert missions behind enemy lines.

The newly-formed group, also known as Churchill’s Secret Army or simply SOE (Special Operations Executive) were promised nothing but glory in the face of war, and Churchill offered no assurances of a safe return; they were simply tasked with “setting Europe ablaze.”

One of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’s most famous victories was during a mission called Operation Anthropoid: the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust and a key figure in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Heydrich’s death, along with many other operations conducted by the SOE throughout the war, supported the British and its allies across Europe.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare book

First published in 2016, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on a non-fiction book written by wartime correspondent and author, Damien Lewis (no, not Billions actor Damian Lewis).

The book was an international best-seller and focuses on the exploits of Colin Gubbins, who played a crucial role in shaping the SOE’s strategy and operations.
